I want to take you on a personal tour of my home town, Summerville! This little town is known for its charm and history…. Established as a town in 1847, Summerville was considered a resort type getaway where residents of downtown Charleston and other neighboring areas sought some relief from the heat and mosquitos to Summerville where the elevation was higher. Summerville is also dubbed as ‘flower town of the pines’ because of it’s location on a pine forest ridge.
Now, let’s talk about one of the most charming areas of Summerville, Hutchinson Square. Hutchinson square consists of shopping, dining, and ‘hobbying’ all on one block. The residents of Summerville are blessed to have a wide variety of boutiques and places to grab food or drinks. Cuppa Manna is an eclectic little coffee shop where you can enjoy a macaroon or baked good along with a delicious cup of coffee. They are also known for their ‘bubble teas’, don’t ask me, it seems to be popular with the high school kids.
You also have the axe joint, a super fun and newer business where you can grab a drink and throw axes. It is very similar to a bowling alley set up and would be great for date night or out on the town with friends. There’s also Maggie Rose, a long-standing boutique here in Summerville with women’s apparel and accessories. And a few steps down you will find Accent on Wine, a wine and snack store turned wine bar by many ‘Summervillian’s’. Accent on Wine also offers a variety of craft beer if wine is not your thing. My husband and I love this place on date night! They have great staff and an awesome atmosphere.
And you cannot visit Summerville without checking out Guerin’s Pharmacy. Guerin’s is the OLDEST pharmacy in all of South Carolina! It has been operating since 1871, and they are well known for their hot dogs, homemade ice cream and smiling faces.
One of the BEST things about living here in Summerville is going to an event called ‘Third Thursday’ every month. Hosted by Summerville Dream, the town shuts down little Main Street and one of the adjacent streets so that vendors can set up and families can walk freely through the square to shop and play. There is also live music or some sort of entertainment during the event. This is a great little area, and these are just some of the many reasons to come visit or stay in Summerville.
